Song writing tips about lyrics

Song writing is both easier and more difficult than you might think. Easier, because it is not mysterious and obscure half-magical art that only the few chosen can do. More difficult, because even though everyone can learn song writing, you will need a some training to do that properly (there is nothing more pathetic as ill-written song lyrics). While this article is far too short to give you the full guide about how you should write a song, here's a few tips that will certainly make starting it a lot easier. As in everything, the beginning is the most difficult part.

How to start a song

It's simple: start it from inventing a title. This will form a backbone of the whole song writing process and will help you to write something consistent. Remember though, that a song's title isn't something that should limit you -- but it is certainly something you'd better stick to (even remotely). Otherwise all your song writing will be in vain and all you'll get will be a few strophes of bad poetry.

Ask questions (mostly to yourself)

The second step of song writing is asking questions. Songs are about feelings, associations and strong emotions. So, most of the song writing process is not about actually writing anything. It is about trying to find out the answers on such questions as "What is it similar to?", "How do XXXX make me feel like?", "What makes XXXX think or look they way it thinks/looks?". Don't start writing lyric a song until you run out of such questions.

Your private thesaurus

The last step before starting actually starting writing a song lyric is creating your small, private thesaurus. Find the words that are connected with the song's title and it's general mood. Look for adjectives, nouns and verbs that are related to the title and begin writing only when you'll have at least two hundred such words. They will form a small thesaurus full of useful words and phrases that will surely become handy during the song writing process. If you fail to do it properly, creating a good lyric will become virtually impossible -- you'll run out of words. And song writing requires a lot of them...

How to write song lyrics an online course

If you don't know how to write song lyrics, but you want to learn it, taking the online course is probably the best thing you can do. For one, there are no offline courses on how to write song lyrics, so everyone who teaches it is involved in the online business. What's more, while you certainly can learn it yourself, not from a course, the latter is much faster and more reliable than making all the mistakes yourself rather than learning about them during a course.

Benefits of taking the how to write song lyrics online course

Taking some how to write song lyrics course has several benefits over trying to do it yourself. The three most important are: help of an expert, feedback and learning the writing techniques.

Instructor

The experienced instructor is the only person who can really give you a hand when you don't know what to do. What's more, the instructor is a living proof that song writing is something that can really be done as well as someone who can give you real life advice on the matters you're struggling with.

Views from another angle

Another important issue while learning how to write song lyrics is the need for feedback. Normally, well until the song is published, all feedback you get comes from your friends and family. Most of the times they will withhold all that they feel will be overly critical. As the result you may not notice the mistakes you make and keep making them until it is too late. Discussion in a virtual classroom over your and your fellow course-mates' lyrics will give you exactly the feedback you need. It will come from people who can will tell you about your mistakes. And that's probably the only way to improve your work and finally learn how to write song lyrics.

Systematized information
